There are three groups within LittleLions-Rugby, these work around age and temperament of the individual child. The individual child is central to all decisions, including which group they join. The key factor to determine this is based on the coaching staff’s assessment of the child’s core fundamentals in terms of motor skills, and general all round ability. Our goal is to make sure they have fun, learn and enjoy the sessions.
Green Lions (2.5 – 3.5 years old)
The Green Lions class encourages core skills like balance, agility and co-ordination. At this age we believe it is important to begin developing social skills, and we promote these by encouraging girls and boys to share, take it turns and work together to complete certain bespoke activities and skills.
The session is up to 45mins and we use a variety of child-friendly equipment ranging from foam rugby balls, canvas hopping ladders and soft kicking tees, and parent participation is encouraged.
The Blue Lions (3.5 – 5 year olds)
The Blue Lions classes starts to introduce more rugby honed skill sets. Scoring trys, kicking at mock posts or targets and side-stepping are the key areas here. We look to mimic the game a little more by including tag belt games. The sessions begin to take on more evasion type games, but still lean heavily towards enjoyment and having FUN.
The Red Lions (5 year olds +)
For the older children we create fun tag rugby lessons. Tag Rugby is a non-contact team game in which each player wears a belt that has two velcro tags attached to it, or shorts with Velcro patches. The mode of play is similar to rugby league with attacking players attempting to dodge, evade and pass a rugby ball while defenders attempt to prevent them scoring by “tagging” – pulling a Velcro attached tag from the ball carrier.
All classes will run during term time and begin at 10am. We would like to ask parents to arrive for 10am and to bring a drink, snack and warm clothes for their Little Lions.
Duration: 45mins to one hour.
